This third edition of Counseling American Minorities: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, like the first two, is designed to help counselors and mental health practitioners maximize their effectiveness when working with a culturally diverse population. A major thesis of this book is that counselors can establish the necessary and sufficient conditions of a counseling relationship with clients who are culturally different. While similarity in race, ethnicity, and culture may be highly correlated with counseling success, we believe that other attributes (ability to share a similar world view, appropriate use of counseling strategies, awareness of own values, etc.) may be equally important factors in cross-cultural counseling.
